There's nothing more embarrassing than seeing a look of distaste on someone's face when you're talking to them when you know it's caused by your bad breath. What is it that causes bad breath and how can you eliminate it if it's something that plagues you? There are a few pretty obvious causes of bad breath. We all know that if we eat pungent foods like garlic and onions, then for a certain amount of time afterwards we have pretty whiffy breath. Fortunately, these types of foods are only temporary causes of bad breath and their effects will eventually wear off. But, of course, there are other bad breath causes that can be more long-lasting. Food particles trapped in your mouth is one of these. Anaerobic bacteria just love these food particles and thrive on them and these bacteria cause bad breath. Another contributory factor to breath that smells is a dry mouth. Saliva is your mouths natural mouthwash. If you aren't producing much saliva - because you've been drinking alcohol or you're nervous, for example - this can lead to the kind of bad breath produced by a dry mouth. If you don't look after your oral hygiene and/or you're a smoker, then you may suffer from bad breath. More seriously, bad breath can indicate an underlying medical problem, possibly a long, stomach or blood condition, or maybe diebetes. Ok, so you know you have a bad breath problem, what can you do about it? One of the best things you can do for starters is pay particular attention to good oral hygiene every day. Something a lot of people still don't do is brush the tongues as well as the teeth and gums. It will pay to get a tongue scraper as this will do a better job of removing stray food particles and dead skin from the tongue that can be contributory factors to bad breath. You should make sure that you book regular check-ups with your dentist so that any necessary treatment can be arranged as quickly as possible so that oral health problems don't get chance to develop into something major. If it's not practical for you to brush your teeth after every meal then you should at the very least swill your mouth with water to loosen and expel as many stray food particles as possible. It's also a good idea to regularly chew sugarfree gum or lozenges to encourage your mouth to produce saliva. Use a mouthwash twice a day, morning and evening, but avoid those all too prevalent ones that contain alcohol. You should stop smoking and refrain from drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine. Eat leafy green vegetables such as parsley. They contain chlorophyll which is a natural breath freshener. The above are some good tips that will help you fight off bad breath.
