Keeping ourselves healthy by eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants can be a good way of keeping the years from showing their effects on our skin. But did you know antioxidants are also being used as effective ingredients in manufacturing anti-aging skin care products? Antioxidants, which includes Catechin Polyphenols from green tea extracts and a fat-soluble Vitamin C called Ascorbyl Palmitate, have been used in anti-aging skin serums and creams as ingredients, but the most potent of the six leading antioxidants is Idebenone. Of the six leading antioxidants tested by a group of researchers, Idebenone received the highest score which is 95 out of 100. The study was conducted to develop the first ever protocol to compare the efficacy of antioxidants on their effects on preventing free-radical skin damage. Idebenone is a synthetic analogue of a naturally-occurring enzyme called Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10). Co Q10 is an important antioxidant component of the lipid (fatty) membranes that surround all cells, as well as the lipid membranes surrounding the various organelles ("little organs"), such as mitochondria and microsomes, inside cells. It is cell energizer, which means it produces the required energy for cell reproduction. However, Idebenone is different from Coenzyme Q10 in one very important way. During a hypoxic (low oxygen) condition, CoQ10 can switch function from an anti-oxidizing to an auto-oxidizing process. This auto-oxidation rapidly produces free radicals which damage the tissues of the body. Studies have shown that in such circumstances Idebenone prevents the free radical damage and maintains relatively normal cell ATP levels. To understand the anti-aging benefits of Idebenone we must first understand the mitochondrial processes in cells. Mitochondrial cells, which contain the richest sites of Co Q10 or Idebenone, create as much as 90% of all ATP bioenergy. Mitochondria is produced from Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA. Over the course of a lifetime our mtDNA becomes ever more damaged, and the mitochondria produced become ever more ineffective in their energy generation. The cells that are most susceptible to mitochondrial energy depletion with advancing age are the brain, skeletal muscle and heart muscle cells. As a result our cells die and various diseases develop in our advanced years. Therefore the benefits of Idebenone, offers the result of anti-aging in several different ways. Idebenone serves as influential in reducing the free radicals of mitochondrial, while curbing the damage that occurs with aging and the increasing of mtDNA, dissimilar to Co Q10, while under conditions of low oxygen that can possibly occur throughout a lifetime. What this means is, Idebenone works much better than Co Q10, under hypoxic conditions within the chain of electron transport in keeping up the production of high energy.
