Depression Is not The End Of The World, But It Can Seem that Way

Depression is often just disregarded as something that only affects a certain type of person or people, weak winded, addicts, the list goes on. In truth though if you or even anyone that you do or have cared about has been affected by it, you will know it to be very serious. The way that it is continually portrayed now in the entertainment industry does vary but quite often a joke is made out of it, like it is funny to watch or not really that important. Of course it is real, so what does a depressive disorder mean really?

I find it very unfortunate that quite a number of people have not been told that depression, while potentially severe is a treatable illness and as such there is help available. More than just something that is in your head, it is very real and affecting at least one person you know right now. Behind heart disease it is the biggest reason for days off work in the United States which is quite an important fact. It has been known to tear families apart, which is a tragedy that may have been avoided. You need to understand what it is, the cause and how it actually affects you. So lets look at what it actually is, thats affecting so many lives

It was reported in a major medical study, that depression caused significant problems in the functioning of those affected more often than did arthritis, hypertension, chronic lung disease, and diabetes, and in two categories of problems, as often as coronary artery disease. Depression is not just "feeling blue" or "down in the dumps". It is a medical disorder as much as is diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. It is something that day after day affects your thoughts, feelings, physical health, and whether you know it or not, your behavior.

Depressive disorder symptoms can affect the physical body as much as they can cause negative thoughts and moods. They are know to have an impact on bodily functions, causing irregular eating and sleeping patterns, sobbing spells, and decrease sex drive. If not looked at depression can actually increase the risk of HIV, asthma, and coronary artery disease to name a few. The biggest thing about depression is even if your not affected, you are at risk.

It is widely noted that depression affects women much more frequently than men, the reason for this however is still not completely clear. It is also common, besides the fact that women are generally affected more than men, that women will more often try and work the problem themselves more than men tend to do. Sometimes, clearly this can work, but it really does come down to the root cause. Good news is that depression, when treated can be helped or cured in more than 80% of all individuals. The unfortunate part is that most people suffering will not try and find help. Just talking about the problem openly can actually help to reduce the symptoms.
