Do I Need To Set Goals?

By: Mike Johnson

Did you ever notice how some people just never manage to reach a fraction of their potential? Quite frankly it's because they have never learned to set goals so all they do is nothing but dreaming.

When you understand how to set goals you have the key to success and attaining all your dreams. It's like taking a trip. Right from the start you know your ending and you have a goal for when you will get there. Along the way you will know whether or not you can take more time or you need to hurry based on your progress.

When you take the time to set goals you have a blueprint for success. Now you will be able to track your efforts and make adjustments as needed to ensure that you meet your objective.

Taking the time to set goals means that you are proactive instead of reactive. The difference is huge and allows you to approach potential problems form a position of strength. By approaching your difficulties from this position of strength you are much calmer and therefore more capable of a creative solution leading to a breakthrough.

When you take the time to set goals you will be able to track your progress in whatever you have set out to do. Not only does this help you become more confident but it also helps you be more motivated to achieve your plans.

Some people think that once they have set goals they're done. Well they are wrong. If all it took to be successful was having a goal then every 5 year old girl in America would have a pony. All kidding aside besides taking the time to set goals you have to take action. That means that you must always be moving towards your goal. As long as you working toward your goal and you determine never to give up you will eventually achieve success..

For most people the secret to success when setting goals is that they are believable. If you set goals that are so huge you don't even think they are possible you will never be motivated to give it a try. which means you failed before you even get started. Take the time to think through you abilities as well as your circumstances and don't be afraid to dream big. Just make sure when it's all said and done with that you believe it's possible.

The other critical factor to when you set goals is making sure you have a deadline. Someone once said that goals are dreams with deadline and I agree. If you don't have a date that you are going to reach this goal by then all you are doing is dreaming. Setting a date puts an end to just thinking about it and prompts you to get started.

When you set goals and begin to reach some of your minor goals or mile stones be sure to congratulate yourself. Doing so is strong reinforcement to your brain letting it know this is a good thing and that you enjoy it. Even minor victories should be celebrated. Just don't settle for them. Enjoy the moment and continue on towards your goal.

I hope you see that you can set goals for any part of your life. The process is the same for a personal goal or a financial goal. Whether your goal is a small one like getting a raise or a big one like owning your own company the process is the same and it all starts with taking the time to set goals.
