While menopause in women has been known and treated for decades, only recently have scientists, and physicians identified how to address this condition in men. Starting at about age 30, testosterone levels drop by about 10 percent every decade. At the same time, another factor in the body called Sex Binding Hormone Globulin, or SHBG, is increasing. SHBG traps much of the testosterone that is still circulating and makes it unavailable to exert its effects in the body's tissues. What's left over does the beneficial work and is known as "bioavailable" testosterone (or “Free” testosterone). Andropause is associated with low free-testosterone levels. Every man experiences a decline of free-testosterone but some men's levels dip lower than others. And when this happens these men can experience Andropause symptoms. Typical responses to low free-testosterone levels include: Low sex drive Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Emotional, psychological and behavioral changes Decreased muscle mass Loss of muscle strength Increased upper and central body fat Osteoporosis or weak bones and back pain Cardiovascular risk How can you help your spouse coping with Andropause? The most important thing you can do is to be supportive and reassuring. Realize that mid-life is going to be challenging for both of you physically and emotionally. Establishing a partnership with your spouse committed to a healthy lifestyle will help improve the quality of your lives and the time you share together. Help your spouse cope with Andropause with support, reassurance, and love, and he will reciprocate with the same care and compassion. Make the rest of your years together the best years of all.
