Sleep Like a Billionaire

By: Dov Oshri

Sure, you can sacrifice some sleep to meet the demands on your time, but you will eventually pay the price. A lack of sleep will not only affect your energy level and mood, it will also impact your health, your immunity, and your longevity.

Here are nine simple ways to get better, deeper, sounder sleep ... starting tonight:

Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day - even on weekends.

Go to bed before midnight. Your hormones rise and fall with the natural dusk to dawn cycle. Every hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours of sleep after that.

Exercise. How sleepy you are at night depends not only on how long you've been awake but also on your level of activity. Doing even 15 minutes of vigorous exercise during the day will do wonders for your ability to get a good night's sleep.

Spend time in the sun. Sun exposure regulates your circadian rhythm and is absolutely necessary to maintain a healthy sleep/wake cycle. Artificial light does not have the same effect on your hormones as full-spectrum sunlight.

Turn down the thermostat. A slightly cool room is ideal for sleeping.

Avoid stimulants before bedtime. You should, of course, avoid caffeine and alcohol (though not technically a stimulant) before bed. But television and active mental tasks can have the same effect.

Sleep in a great bed. You spend one-third of your life in bed - and you should enjoy those blissful hours. If you are not sleeping in comfort and style, make it a point to upgrade your mattress and bedding. Amazingly mattress prices are not widely spread. The best most expensive mattress is affordable even to a mid-class earner. So why not spending 1/3 of your life time on the same mattress billionaires sleep?

Sleep in a very dark room. Even a little bit of light in the room can disturb your rest. The darker your sleep environment the better.

Stop using your snooze alarm . Doing so doesn't give you an extra 30 minutes of restful sleep. Instead, it interferes with your REM sleep (where your memories are consolidated and your learning is reinforced).
