Talk Yourself Happy

By: Tobias Reibber

Getting people to love you means loving yourself first. You have many positive qualities, but it's not always easy to see them in yourself. Positive reinforcement is a valuable tool in improving your self-esteem and the easiest way to do this is through self-talk.

There is a little voice inside your head that keeps a running commentary on everything you do. That is your "self talk". This voice should be telling you that you look great, you're smart, friendly and likeable, and that you're doing a good job. If you are suffering from low self-esteem, that voice can be critical, reminding you of your personal pitfalls or failures. People with low self-esteem can often feel inferior to others in many ways.

It's important that you realize that the critical, nagging voice is wrong. You already possess everything you need to become a confident person and lead a fulfilling life. The trick is in telling yourself over and over until you realize that it is true. This is one of the hardest things for people with low self-esteem to believe, but it is true. Tell yourself you'll get what you deserve, and you will get it.

Your personal self-talk can determine how you act toward others and, in turn, how they react to you. If you tell yourself and believe that you are truly confident, you'll act in ways that inspire trust in others. Self talk that fuels uncertainty and low confidence, on the other hand, causes you to act in ways that creates doubt in others.

It can be hard to face the little voice in your head, but you need to do it in order to break the vicious cycle. Hear the negative messages, and react to them by reinforcing your own positive messages. Positive self-talk is the first and most important step in improving your own self-esteem.

Changing your self image can be a big job. If you'd like extra help or more information, there is a wide selection of self-help CDs, books and videos available on the market. Support groups and self-improvement seminars are great ways to find the personal backing you need to succeed. Use the Internet and search your library or book store for the resources that are available to you.

If you try self talk or other self-improvement methods without success, don't give up. You may need the extra help that a therapist or counselor can provide. These professionals can give you expert advice to boost your self-esteem. Using self-help resources along with counseling sessions will certainly boost your chance of success.

You are a worthy, valuable person. Your time is also valuable, so don't waste it by paying attention to a critical voice in your head. Take control of your self talk and you will be able to take control of your life. Only then will you begin to live the life that you deserve.
