Look around next time you are outside and you will see why dieting and diets have become such a huge interest the American people. With over 60% of Americans overweight, we are increasingly looking for answers to lose the weight and keep it off for good. I really hate to sound so harsh, but your next diet is likely to fail. If peoples diets succeeded then why would they go on diet after diet? Are all the diets really just crap? Or is it possible that the person on the diet has more influence than we are led to believe? That's a good thing because it means you have all the control to make your next diet a slimming success. We are constantly demanding weight loss success in days, weeks at the longest. That's a pretty shortsighted perspective. If expected to lose it in weeks and it took months, you feel like a failure. If you expect months and it takes less time you feel like a success. So what would happen if you changed how long you expected it would take you to lose your weight? Long term dieting success is not about the fad diet. Its about changing your habits and developing a more healthy lifestyle. Yes that means that scary word "change". But when you develop healthy habits, you begin to perform them subconsciously and without thinking. Replacing bad habits with good ones is key. Were you hoping for something more profound? After all, our society is all about magic diets. Maybe you realize deep down that I am right. If not you are likely to keep searching for a magic pill that solves all your problems. I wish it were like that. Its not. I have tried it both ways and I finally got it right when I realized one thing. I didn't put the weight on over night or in a month or in 3 months. As a 5'10" male, 220lbs didn't feel too good, and when I was huffing and puffing at the top a flight of stairs, I knew it had to change. I also realized that my ideal weight of 170-175 was 45+ pounds lighter and a long way off from 220. And that was the key. The answer to it all lies in the numbers. At 3500 calories per pound of fat it you will only lose 4 lbs per month when you burn 500 more calories a day more than your metabolism requires for normal operation. At 1250 calories a day you would drop and aggressive 10 pounds a month. So you can see that it could a long time to lose all your weight. By starting your diet with this realism, you set yourself up for success. And if you are still with me now, there is hope for you. Because once you realize that it needs to be a long term solution, you will set goals that are achievable. Start with 1 pound a week and see what happens. Most likely you will succeed and feed good about the process to try for more. Maybe you shoot for two pounds a week the next month. The numbers don't matter, sticking with it does. By now you know that you are the ultimate factor in your diet's success. That doesn't mean a diet plan isn't helpful. It is because it helps you get going in the right direction and gives you some structure to start getting results. However, when you reach your goal, it won't be the diet that you are happy about, it will be yourself for sticking with it and reaching your goals through better choices and better habits.
