The Uses of Aromatherapy

By: Helenka Petrona

Aromatherapy is a method used to calm the body and mind, fight infections, and promote well-being through the use of essential oils. Essential oils are derived from plants via various methods of distillation. Aromatherapy has been used for hundreds of years by different cultures all over the world. There is no denying the powerful effects of plants on our lives and essential oils are no exception.

The uses of essential oils vary, and it's imperative to follow all the guidelines. When not used correctly, certain oils can actually harm someone. For instance, some oils are not to be put directly on the skin but must be combined with a carrier oil for dillution.

One of the most popular ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your daily routine is through the use of creams or soaps. There are many companies that offer blends of essential oils in base creams, each with a different purpose in mind. You can find blends made to energize, relax, or revitalize. You can easily make these creams yourself through the use of an unscented cream and by adding essential oils that compliment each other. This may take some experimenting, but you can come up with some wonderful combinations.

Another popular method of aromatherapy is inhalation. This is an especially good method when using essential oils the help fight infections. The easiest method of using essential oils by inhalation is to drop several drops of an essential oil, such as tea tree oil, into a bowl of gently steaming bowl of water. Be cautious about using too much oil - start with a very few drops (two or three) and gradually add more if needed. You can also use a diffuser to distribute the essential oils. The effects may not be as powerful as when using direct inhalation, certain blends can provide a calming influence in a home, and add a pleasant scent.

A few words of caution when using essential oils for aromatherapy: many oils are not recommended for use with children or animals. If you have children, especially very young ones, you should be sure to check the properties of each type of essential oil before using it, even if it is just in a diffuser. If you feel that a child could benefit from direct contact with an essential oil you should check with a pediatrician first. Many animals are particularly sensitive to essential oils, even when used in very small doses in a diffuser. Overuse of essential oils can actually cause liver damage in some pets. If you share your home with animals, please try to limit your use of essential oils in a diffuser and perhaps stick to using them in creams. Before considering using an essential oil directly on your pet please visit your veterinarian.

Aromatherapy can enhance your life by providing balance in your mind and body. Essential oils and their uses have profound effects on the moods, attitude, and well-being of the individual that uses them. Aromatherapy can be powerful, and must be used carefully and responsibly, with special care being taken around pet and children. The world of aromatherapy is complex, with vast benefits to the individuals that use it. Aromatherapy is a wonderful way to enhance your life.
