By: John Grimme

Not all cancers are the same. Some are deadly from diagnosis, but others are not. Skin cancer is preventable and treatable, but many people fail to take the steps to avoid it.

Imagine sitting in a doctor’s office and being told you have cancer. Although cancer treatment has come a long way, it would still be a devastating moment.

What are your first thoughts? Am I going to die? Is it terminal? Can something that small really be a problem? Just what are we talking about here?

Being told you have cancer can certainly get the pulse going. You could have something horrific, but skin cancer usually isn’t. Even more important, you could have prevented it.

The layers of your skin, with the epidermis being typical, are where you will find skin cancer. In nominal terms, the cancer is an atypical growth in the cells of the particular layer.

As you can probably guess, skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. The exposure can be for short periods that result in burns, but they can also be for exposure over long periods of time. Having a good tan has not been shown to make a difference.

“Skin cancer” is actual a global term for a health risk that can be caused by a number of problems. That is to say, you don’t get skin cancer per se. You get one of the following.

The least common form of skin cancer is also the deadlines. We are talking about melanoma. Malignant. Unless caught early, it will spread and is fatal.

Basal cell skin cancer, on the other hand, is the most frequently seen skin cancer. It is rarely fatal. Oddly, it can also be hereditary. If you family has a history of it, get checked out.

A third category of cancer is Squamous cell. It is can form on your skin or in your internal organs. How scary is that? Squamous is treatable, but can also spread and be fatal.

Any cancer diagnosis is obviously a bad thing. The ironic and sad fact of skin cancer is you can reduce your risk to practically zero. You just need to take common sense steps.

Love to be outside? Is your idea of a good time to go for walks, lay out in the sun or maybe just poke around in the garden? Well, you are increasing your risk of getting skin cancer.

Should you avoid being outside. Nope. All you have to do is take precautionary steps. First and foremost, wear sunscreen! How hard is that? It will protect you from the damaging rays of the sun and the potential of skin cancer.
