Introduction
to Emotional Freedom Techniques for Natural Therapy Guide
By Margaret Munoz
What if there was something that you could use to rapidly release
negative emotions such as fear, anger, grief and guilt, help you to
relax and de-stress quickly, put an end to your self-sabotage, assist
you in gaining confidence, free you from specific phobias or past
traumas and clear physically symptoms such as headaches, back pain and
asthma? And what if it was easy to learn and you could do it yourself?
Happily there is such a thing. Emotional Freedom Techniques, commonly
referred to as EFT, is a highly effective and powerful tool that you
can learn for yourself as well as use with a practitioner. It’s a
simple method of stimulating energy meridian points on your body by
tapping them with your fingertips. You do this while focusing on a
particular issue that you want to be free from. This issue can be a
negative emotion, a physical symptom, a limiting belief or an unwanted
behaviour. It’s rather like acupuncture but without the needles. A
distinctive and very useful feature of EFT is that you can apply it to
yourself and you can do it anywhere, at any time. EFT belongs to the
field of energy therapies, or energy psychology, a rapidly developing
field that is having wide ramifications in health and healing work by
providing remarkably fast and effective treatments.
EFT was named and founded by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineering
graduate, ordained minister and Certified Master Practitioner in Neuro
Linguistic Programming (NLP). He was born in 1940 and has had an
intense interest in personal improvement through psychology since he
was 13. Gary Craig studied with Dr. Roger Callahan, a clinical
psychologist, who developed a system of diagnosis and a set of
algorithms (specific tapping patterns) after working with a client who
had an intense water phobia associated with frequent headaches and
terrifying nightmares, though the feeling associated with the phobia
was in her stomach. Long term treatment with traditional methods had
made little difference but after Callahan learned about the Chinese
energy meridian system he asked his client to tap on the stomach
meridian point under her eye and much to her excitement the feeling
immediately left. In fact the phobia vanished along with the symptoms
and never returned.
Callahan called his approach Thought Field Therapy, which produced
excellent clinical results. Craig then developed EFT through
investigating the possibility that one comprehensive set of “all
purpose” simple and easy to use tapping points would produce the
desired result in most cases and this has proved to be correct.
EFT works by balancing the body’s energy system as you tap with your
fingers on certain points along the energy meridians. Negative emotions
are quickly released, physical symptoms abate and, interestingly,
cognitive shifts are created that bring new insight and hope. EFT is
gentle and non-invasive. It doesn’t involve taking anything that might
have side effects or react with other medications or supplements.
An unusual aspect of EFT is its universality. We are used to having
certain remedies for certain problems but the range of what EFT can be
used for is astonishing – you can use the same basic procedure to
improve your improve your relationships, eliminate your fear of public
speaking and clear your chronic back pain. Use it to enhance study,
before a trip to the dentist, on difficult relationships, past trauma
and abuse, cancer, weight loss, addictions, fears and phobias,
insomnia, grief, lack of self-esteem. It’s particularly useful for
dealing with the stresses of every day living but as well as freeing
you from what you don’t want you can also use it to enhance your
performance and achieve your goals. It can be used not only to solve
problems but also to create and manifest more happiness, joy and
abundance in your life.
During a treatment you will be asked what problem or symptom you want
to be free from, or what you want to achieve from the consultation.
You’ll be shown how to tap - it’s very easy to learn, pain free and on
the body points you tap over your clothes. You’ll then be asked to
focus on a particular aspect of the problem, and you’ll do some rounds
of tapping on the problem. You tap on yourself with the practitioner
tapping along on themselves telling you what to say as you tap the
various points. In some cases the practitioner may tap on you with your
permission. You may find yourself yawning or feel slight tingling in
your body and you might be surprised to find you suddenly feel more
relaxed, while the upset or physical symptom has diminished or
disappeared. You can continue in this way until all aspects of the
problem have been resolved.

In today’s hectic life, there are many people who are time poor. They
are rushing around so much and getting stressed, that they do not
realize that they are in need of help, and even if they do, they may
not know where to go to get help or even what type of help they require.
The first step to take is EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) which is
the greatest place to start. With the right set of commands, you can
immediately get to the heart of the problem, not only that, but as you
work through it, side issues can be highlighted and solved on the way.
Everything is possible to achieve from stopping smoking to fear of
flying and beyond and the beauty is it can take just a few minutes a
day.
After your initial session, which should be undertaken with a trained
therapist, you are able to work on your own, not only that, but you
can, as long as it is not a painful subject, where you may need
privacy, work anywhere or any time, in the car, on the bus or train, if
you don't mind the odd look or two. Further sessions with your
therapist may be beneficial as they will be able to more thoroughly
pinpoint a problem and assist with further ways to explore your problem.
The scope of EFT is just amazing, its use in the psychological release
of problems can be truly amazing in the way it gets right to the heart
of the matter and then give immediate relief, leaving the person
feeling better about themselves, after which, further work will reduce
the problem to a manageable level, if not remove it completely.
EFT can be effective in all sorts of ways, whether it is losing weight
or dealing with addictions like smoking, it can really help a person
cope with these problems because it not only deals with the specific
issue but, with proper use, it can discover and correct underlying
issues that are often the root of the problem, yet are not immediately
apparent to the subject.
One of the strangest benefits of EFT is its ability to disperse pain, I
know it sounds crazy but it can work. I have used it to get rid of
headaches and tooth aches so I know it is effective in those cases.
Another area where EFT can be used, is in increasing a persons
abundance. This doesn't mean that by using EFT they will win the
lottery the following week, although they might, it means that it can
be used to remove any negative traits and blockages that can hold a
person back. Using EFT this way will give a more positive attitude,
which means that one is more open and receptive and therefore attracts
abundance in positive things.
One of the big growth areas in the use of EFT is improving sports
performance. It is being used in nearly every sport there is. One of
the big ones is in improving ones golf swing and putting, the results
have been quite amazing because it removes any blocks a person has that
sub-consciously affects their game and they are able to focus more on
their game. It is also used to increase motivation and performance.
There is no area of life where EFT cannot be effective in some way or
other; the only limiting thing is you.

What if there were a simple 3-minute technique you could do anytime you
wanted to stop the cravings dead in their tracks, or end your emotional
attachment to food?
No matter who you are, where you were raised or what kind of parenting
you had, you likely have a few "issues" around food. We crave certain
foods at certain times for many different reasons but they all are
based on our emotions. You may occasionally eat even though you're not
really hungry, or you may not even know what hungry feels like any
more. Do certain events make you want to reach for a snack? Do TV
commercials send you to the kitchen even though you just ate dinner?
How about a bad day at work or an angry spouse? Does that make you want
to just chew on something? You don't need to know why, but you can
change your eating habits and patterns easily.
Changing the way you think about food is nothing new, but up until now
you've never been given any ideas as to how to make a change in your
thinking. It's easier than you may think.
How to Reduce or even Eliminate Non-stop Snacking
A simple technique taking less than 3-minutes a few times a day can
make the difference between feeling in or out-of-control. You want to
be driving your own bus? EFT is a derivation of a technique known as
TFT (Thought Field Therapy) originally introduced by Dr. Roger
Callahan. Callahan discovered while working with a long-time patient
that simply tapping under the eye could affect her fear of the water,
and his multiple year study of why this occurred began. Engineer Gary
Craig took the training to learn TFT but he wondered if simply tapping
all the points couldn't be effective, rather than having to learn
elaborate sequences? Craig's tests were successful and he named his
method EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).
Craig has been instrumental in bringing this process to the world
through a free ebook, and inexpensive CD sets that demonstrate the
process. Practitioners are spin-off methods are springing up all over,
but you can learn it yourself in only a few minutes and then get busy
putting it to use.
This technique known as EFT is taking the world by storm and is used
for things such as phobia, trauma, and many others. One More Bite's
program, Ending Emotional Eating, uses EFT and NLP (Neuro Linguistic
Programming) for weight loss. You can learn it at no cost by getting
The Daily Bites, mini lessons in how to use EFT for losing more weight
and ending the pain of regaining after the diet.
