The Many Disguises of Mono Sodium GlutamateBy: Ainsley LaingThe other day, I got an email from an American guy who lives in Malaysia. He was saying that cooking with mono sodium glutamate (MSG) is a real health problem to Malaysians and that he “doesn’t allow it in his house”. MSG, so what’s the big deal? It’s the stuff used in large quantities in Chinese/Southeast Asian food, right? Wrong. It’s everywhere in almost all processed foods! You see, it was derived from seaweed in Japan in the 1930s and very quickly became popular in United States as a food additive. As long ago as the 1970s, manufacturers promised to take it out of baby food because of suspected problems – no kidding. Consumers long ago became savvy to MSG listed as an ingredient on food labels and stopped buying things with MSG. So guess what? Manufacturers just renamed the stuff. Here are some of the ingredient names in food that are “cover names” for MSG: Broth Casein or Caseinate Glutamate Hydrolyzed Yeast Autolyzed Yeast Yeast Extract Hydrolyzed Protein Natural Flavors MSG is one of the most popular food additives in food in the US. Fast food chains and restaurants use a lot of it. McDonald’s use it to flavor French fries, the Grilled Chicken Fillet and the Sausage Patties. Pizza Hut uses it to flavor their Chicken Wings. In the supermarket, you can bet that if it’s a sauce, salad dressing, snack foods, potato, tortilla chips, soups, crackers, cookies it’s probably got MSG in it. It’s everywhere – even baby formula. If it’s a processed or “convenience” food, it’s likely to have MSG. Why? Because people buy stuff that tastes good. The science: Have you heard of glutamic acid or glutamate? It’s a naturally occurring amino acid in foods. MSG is the sodium salt extracted from glutamic acid. Originally, MSG was derived from protein rich foods, like seaweed; but now it’s made from starch, corn sugar, molasses or sugar beets. Well, glutamate naturally occurring in foods is a bound amino acid and the body is equipped to process it as other protein. But, when processed it becomes free and the body processes it differently. Simply put, high levels of unbound glutamate causes free radical damage throughout the body. So, eating a lot of processed protein foods where the glutamic acid has been “unbound” results in free radical damage – which is host to all sorts of diseases, most notably cancer. MSG falls into this category. And since it tastes so good, people want more and more of it. Other processed protein foods which end up with free glutamic acids include: ultra pasteurized milk, (this is an unlikely one) the wax they put on vegetables and fruit contains hydrolyzed protein and ultra pasteurized soy milk. Another side note: MSG is an excitotoxin. When consumed, it excites brain neurons so much that they are damaged or even die! Aspartame, sold in the U.S. as NutraSweet and Europe as Candarel is also classified as an excitotoxin. Yuk. What to do? Well, I suppose we as consumers have to vote with our purchases. Armed with the knowledge that food manufacturers and restaurants are using MSG and disguising it; we need to read labels, ask questions and stop buying products that will harm us. Though, that is only part of the solution to a good diet. There is something that we also need to talk about. What we haven't talked about is eating habits. Knowing when you should eat and when you should not eat is an important topic and strategy of a successful diet. The reason it is important is because when you are dieting, you don't want to run the risk of binge eating. In other words, pushing yourself to the point of acute hunger then overeating all at one time. Let me ask you this... does this ring a bell at all? For breakfast you have very little to eat or perhaps nothing at all. Around lunch time, you are either too busy or you just don't want to consume any unhealthy restaurant or fast foods. So by this point maybe you've had something to drink and a cracker or two. Now, by the time you get back home, your body is screaming for something to eat. In fact, you're so hungry you could eat a proverbial horse. You rationalize eating way more than you should because you essentially have had nothing all day long. You end up closing out your day by watching some television... in fact, you fall asleep while doing so. So, eating all three of your daily meals in one sitting isn't the same for you as eating three separate meals during the day? Nope... not hardly. Your body isn't prepared to handle that type of all at once digesting and it is not healthy. All you are doing is over loading your body. The real risk of binging is this. You will end up eating things that you shouldn't be eating. You will end up eating a ton of fast food or other food that is high and fat and easy to obtain. Why is this? This is because you are so hungry, you have to eat something now. This tends to be whatever you can get your hands on. Generally, it will be something that isn't good for you. This is why it is important that you eat all three of your meals. A sling shot type of eating habit will not only not accomplish your weight loss goals (in fact it will probably make your weight even worse) but it is very unhealthy for your body as well. Think consistent nourishment for your body in more frequent measured doses. Healthy snacks between your smaller meals is also a good practice (note the 'healthy' part). Having a healthy snack between the meals is a great way to keep your body's nourishment and energy level at a more consistent operating level and help you stay more consistent with healthy eating habits. The key thing to remember is to eat healthy snacks. Eat things that make your feel good, not things that are loaded with fat. Things that are loaded with fat will only make you feel drained and make you want to snack more. Changing your eating habits to having three smaller meals per day is the goal. Even if you seem to struggle to do this, be patient and persistent... do not allow the binge eating cycle to get started. Remember that if your eatings habits involve starving yourself all day long to the point of getting the shakes then eating whatever you can to make them stop; you need to change your eating habits. Comic ReliefM&M's: The Theory of EvolutionWhenever I get a package of plain
M&Ms, I make it my duty to continue the strength and robustness of
the candy as a species.
To this end, I hold M&M duels. Taking two candies between my thumb and forefinger,I apply pressure, squeezing them together until one of them cracks and splinters. That is the "loser," and I eat the inferior one immediately. The winner gets to go another round. I have found that, in general, the brown and red M&Ms are tougher, and the newer blue ones are genetically inferior. I have hypothesized that the blue M&Ms as a race cannot survive long in the intense theatre of competition that is the modern candy and snack-food world. Occasionally I will get a mutation, a candy that is misshapen, or pointier, or flatter than the rest. Almost invariably this proves to be a weakness, but on very rare occasions it gives the candy extra strength. In this way, the species continues to adapt to its environment. When I reach the end of the pack, I am left with one M&M, the strongest of the herd. Since it would make no sense to eat this one as well, I pack it neatly in an envelope and send it to: M&M Mars, A Division of Mars, Inc. Hackettstown, NJ 17840-1503 U.S.A., along with a 3x5 card reading, "Please use this M&M for breeding purposes." Whey Protein and Why It's a Must For the Fitness MindedBy: Colin JohnsonThe key building block within the human body that unlocks muscular development and repair is protein. The mere fact that protein makes up about 75% of the solids in the body, makes it an essential ingredient that must be maintained in order to stay healthy. It is often the highest priority for elite athletes because of its physical benefits. Yet, the average exerciser on most occasions, neglects proteins wonderful advantages. The molecules of protein are made up of amino acid chains and are quite intricate. It is a chemical structure containing nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and often sulphur. For sustaineed human life protein in absolutely essential. Many consider that protein is a vital ingredient only for the top athlete or those wanting to build their muscle form and structure. Wrong. Protein is a must for all. It plays the highly important role of muscle and tissue repair and development and a major player in every persons overall health. Muscle growth and toning occurs when tiny tears occur within the muscle tissues as we exercise. As these tears repair, muscle development takes place. The key ingredient in the building blocks of muscle recovery and repair is protein. We get this protein from a variety of foods. The down side is that the fasterv the protein arrives at the muscle after exercise the quicker and more effective this process becomes. The best way to ensure your muscles are taken care of is by delivering protein to them via a whey protein shake. Protein shakes get to the required area within 30-40 minutes as opposed to food which can take many, many hours. My advice is to definitely supplement with protein but always head for a food authority accrediated and dairy licenced brand. When is the best time to consume protein shakes is a question I'm commonly asked. Personally I feel there are three optimum times. The first being immediately after exercise so as protein can get straight to the muscles to do its recovery and growth job. Foods high in protein are also necessary here but will take way longer to arrive at the muscles to start repair. It is also alot easier for one to down a drink rather than food after an intense workout. Breakfast is another top time for proetin shakes to be consumed as the body will need replenishing after a nights sleep. Before bed at night is also an excellent time as it will keep your metabolism functioning at a high level. Almost losing weight while you sleep! There are many types of protein, yet Whey Protein is by far the most popular choice of those seeking muscle growth, a toned body and overall improvement in health. However, many do opt for the alternate Soy Protein in slimming products as Soy has lean muscle mass benefits. We strongly advise that you continue to consume healthy natural foods high in protein in partnership with your protein supplement. You will probably receive varying advice in regard to the amount of protein required in your diet depending on the intensity of your workouts, your body size and what shape you are aiming for. Despite this, protein is an extremely intelligent additive to todays diet given our haphazard eating patterns that have to fit in with the rat race of life. But as general guide 10grams per 4.5kg/10pounds of body weight is good. So if your weight sits at 100kg then 220grams of protein is recommended. 90kg then 220gm, 80kg then 175gm, 70kg then 155grams of protein. It is widely considered that you cannot take too much protein. However, if you do take excessive amounts it can lower the amount of magnesium and calcium in the body and I would suggest you supplement your diet with added calcium and magnesium. However, if you stick to the guide of protein to body weight it will keep you in the recommended intake. Protein is also considered a key by many when it comes to weight loss, slimming and fine body toning. The beneficial nature of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet is supported by much of the most recent evidence. Stanford University conducted a large randomized study and noted that females following such a diet had a decrease in body weight and overall experienced more favorable metabolic effects at 1 year than in other diets. The study tracked 311 pre-menopausal women, that were also non-diabetic, age 25-50. Natural high protein foods are: meat, fish, eggs, milk, legumes and beans. Because intense muscular workouts use high amounts of protein as energy it is important that the body has lots of protein to use for muscle development, growth, recovery and repair. Protein supplements such as Glutamine and Whey Protein provides high quality protein that can be easily taken when your body requires it most. He highly recommends whey protein shakes for muscle recovery, shaping and development. Colin can be contacted at admin@protein4health.com to answer all your questions relating to supplements. How To Release NegativityBy: Michelle BeaudryHow Are You Going To Do It? You're tired of being negative. You're ready to change. You need a plan. Read on, my friend, for this is the process of releasing negativity and restoring your spirit. Change is good. Fear and Anger Are Killers Ask any doctor. The stress of feeling badly all the time can easily lead to medical disorders. Your body and mind are a continuum. In other words, although they are not exactly the same, a great overlap exists between your mind and body, uniting them. Relieve your mental stress and your body will be happier, too. It's time to unburden yourself of everything that has been blocking progress in your life by keeping you attached to an unhappy past. Feeling Better Is a Process Negativity accumulates in our lives, in our souls, over time. The process of removing it optimally happens in layers. It's best to release as much of each stored negative emotion as you can during each sucessive attempt. And of course, you want a safe, private means of release that is as quiet and effective as possible. You can jettison all that old negativity easily and thoroughly by following simple instructions. Visualization Sports teams have used visualization to improve their level of excellence for decades, visualizing themselves winning trophies, for example. This same technique that so wonderfully installs positive expectation can also be used to eliminate negativity. This means that you can literally let go of old stored feelings of anger, fear, abandonment, embarrassment, and so on, that have been accumulating inside of you all of your life. Let a Higher Power Help You Do you prefer the word God, Source, Universe, Goddess, Higher Self, or do you have yet another name for that which is all that is? Let your choice reflect your tastes, and let your Higher Power help you. For once you release negative energy, your Higher Power can then transform it into something positive elsewhere in the Universe. Humans Store Emotions Physically Your body is made of cells, the cells are made of molecules, the molecules are made of atoms, and those are made up of whirling bits of energy; ergo, your body is pure energy. We humans store old memories and emotions in our bodies. That's why the releasing of negativity is a physical, visceral feeling of expelling energy, because energy is what it is, what it all is, what we all are. Ask Einstein. Examples of What To Release Fear, anger, rage, abandonment, rejection, guilt, shame, worry, blame, numbness, hurt, hatred, jealousy, and disgust are good places to begin. Your unique soul will know which feelings most need releasing, and in which order to do them. You may need to release some of the deepest ones several times to remove ever deeper layers. What Does It Feel Like? Expelling negativity is not a negative experience, it is a relief. For example, when you let go of a deep layer of fear, you do not feel afraid, you feel relieved of fear. Letting go of rage does not mean that you'll be shouting and thrashing about. Rather, your feelings of rage simply pass out of you, and it is a relief. The old negative feelings are fully released and expelled outwards. Releasing negative emotions needn't involve experiencing the pain inherent in any individual emotion. You've already experienced way too much of that. Getting rid of them feels like what it is: a release. It's like taking a gorilla off of your back. It's removing old baggage that does not serve you anymore. It actually feels good. And you will feel progressively better afterwards each time. Follow Instructions Through the Steps Get quiet and close your eyes. Be in a quiet, comfortable place without distractions. Vizualize that you are standing in a beautiful place with your arms up, way up, looking up at your Higher Power. Select the negative emotion you first wish to release, and make that happen. Feel it physically leaving your body, sailing up your arms, and then being jettisoned out into space, gone for good, released permanently. Repeat with all the rest of the stored emotions you wish to release. Another approach is to phrase it like this: "I release whatever is obstructing me from my goals," and let the stored emotions let you know what they are as they leave. Then Restore Your Spirit Once the bad layers are released, it's best to fill up the spaces they left with something wonderfully positive. May I suggest that you begin the restoration of your spirit with Personal Power, Love, Acceptance, and Inner Peace. Personal Power restores your boundaries to normal settings, Love returns you to harmony with all that is, Acceptance assures you that you are wanted and welcomed in the world, and Inner Peace encloses you in a wonderful blanket of secure and peaceful feelings. Simply visualize each of these in turn, whatever they look like to you, and bring each inside of you, merging and bonding with it, soaking in its individual positive energy, then radiating its clarity and serenity everywhere throughout your person. Think of these as permanent upgrades to your soul. Is There An Easier Way? Yes, there is an easier way. "Release Negativity and Restore Your Spirit" CD takes you through all the steps in under an hour. Using emotive visualization, you'll be able to have both the release and restoration experiences privately, in your own time, in your own home. You are unique, and may require repeated listenings for full relief. And full relief is what you want. Emotive visualization combines music, narration, and detailed instructions in order to open the hard drive of your subconscious mind and upgrade your files by forming new neural connections. But did you know antioxidants are also being used as effective ingredients in manufacturing anti-aging skin care products? Antioxidants, which includes Catechin Polyphenols from green tea extracts and a fat-soluble Vitamin C called Ascorbyl Palmitate, have been used in anti-aging skin serums and creams as ingredients, but the most potent of the six leading antioxidants is Idebenone. Of the six leading antioxidants tested by a group of researchers, Idebenone received the highest score which is 95 out of 100. The study was conducted to develop the first ever protocol to compare the efficacy of antioxidants on their effects on preventing free-radical skin damage. Idebenone is a synthetic analogue of a naturally-occurring enzyme called Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10). Co Q10 is an important antioxidant component of the lipid (fatty) membranes that surround all cells, as well as the lipid membranes surrounding the various organelles ("little organs"), such as mitochondria and microsomes, inside cells. It is cell energizer, which means it produces the required energy for cell reproduction. However, Idebenone is different from Coenzyme Q10 in one very important way. During a hypoxic (low oxygen) condition, CoQ10 can switch function from an anti-oxidizing to an auto-oxidizing process. This auto-oxidation rapidly produces free radicals which damage the tissues of the body. Studies have shown that in such circumstances Idebenone prevents the free radical damage and maintains relatively normal cell ATP levels. To understand the anti-aging benefits of Idebenone we must first understand the mitochondrial processes in cells. Mitochondrial cells, which contain the richest sites of Co Q10 or Idebenone, create as much as 90% of all ATP bioenergy. Mitochondria is produced from Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA. Over the course of a lifetime our mtDNA becomes ever more damaged, and the mitochondria produced become ever more ineffective in their energy generation. The cells that are most susceptible to mitochondrial energy depletion with advancing age are the brain, skeletal muscle and heart muscle cells. As a result our cells die and various diseases develop in our advanced years. Therefore the benefits of Idebenone, offers the result of anti-aging in several different ways. Idebenone serves as influential in reducing the free radicals of mitochondrial, while curbing the damage that occurs with aging and the increasing of mtDNA, dissimilar to Co Q10, while under conditions of low oxygen that can possibly occur throughout a lifetime. What this means is, Idebenone works much better than Co Q10, under hypoxic conditions within the chain of electron transport in keeping up the production of high energy. Seven Tips For Controlling Premature EjaculationBy: Yap KcPremature ejaculation is embarrassing for the man and no fun for the woman. If you're having a bit of a problem going for the long run, here are 7 tips that will help. Relax Premature ejaculation often results from performance anxiety. Try oral sex, toys, fingers, and passionate kissing to build her passion. If she's sufficiently excited before intercourse she won’t need as much time to reach orgasm. Take care of yourself beforehand Premature ejaculation sometimes occurs because guys are too fired up. The slightest bit of action sets them off a bit too soon. Relieve some pressure by masturbating before the big event. Not right before because getting erect immediately afterwards might be difficult. A few hours before should do the trick. Wear a condom Decreasing sensitivity helps prevent premature ejaculation. One way to make the penis less sensitive is to cover it with a rubber. They're also good for protecting against STDs and unwanted pregnancy, so why not let a rubber help with premature ejaculation, too. Never put on more than one at a time thinking that thicker is better. It’s not. Other desensitizing products Specially-formulated creams containing topical anesthetics can help numb the penis and put premature ejaculation suffers at ease. Be careful though. Don’t accidentally numb your partner without her permission! Once the penis numbs, wash the cream off. Another option is to cover the cream with a condom. Just be sure the cream doesn’t contain ingredients that will cause the condom to weaken or break. Think about something else Careful with this one! If you think of the wrong thing, premature ejaculation may end up being one of several problems. Self-inflicting pain on another body part, memorizing mathematical equations, or creating images of unattractive women have helped some guys, but results do vary. Steer clear of alcohol and drugs Tuning in to your body and feelings can help you control premature ejaculation. When you’re in an altered state of mind, tuning in becomes difficult. Do your homework Several techniques have been developed that help men control the timing of their ejaculations. Mastering techniques such as the “pinch” method, or the “start-stop” method help men identify and focus on the moments that precede the “point of no return.” Don’t give up on sex! These techniques and others have helped many men overcome the embarrassing and frustrating condition called premature ejaculation.
